We all know that our local animal shelters and rescue groups are great places to find a homeless dog or cat to adopt. But if you think the only place to find a small pet like a hamster, gerbil, or guinea pig is at a pet store, think again. Shelters and rescue groups are awesome resources if you’re looking to adopt a small animal that needs a good home. To raise awareness about this issue, March has been designated as Adopt a Rescued Guinea Pig Month!
According to the Petfinder website, there are thousands of rescue guinea pigs at U.S. shelters just waiting for their forever homes. Most have been surrendered by their owners. Animal advocates recommend that if you’re in the market for a guinea pig or other small pet, check out local shelters and rescue groups before heading to the pet store. You can do a targeted search for guinea pigs and other small animals on petfinder.com. Petfinder reports that they list around 10,000 adoptable guinea pigs annually!
If there’s a kid in your life who loves to go to the pet store and look at the small animals…and ask for one of their own…now is the perfect time to plan a trip to your local shelter or rescue group and find that perfect pocket pet. It’s a great opportunity to educate the next generation about the importance of adopting homeless animals, too!
